Many believed it was an April Fool’s prank when tabloid Ilta-Sanomat revealed earlier this month that Jukka Jalonen, the recently retired coach of the Finnish men’s national ice hockey team, had taken a position coaching the Italian national team. Although Jalonen has not yet executed a formal contract, the Italian Ice Sport Federation declared on Monday morning that he will take over as the team’s new coach. On a two-year contract, the most successful national team coach in Finland will guide the Italian squad in the 2025 and 2026 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships.
