In the women’s tennis doubles competition on Sunday, Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider won a silver medal, becoming the first Russian athletes to win a medal in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Competing as Individual Neutral Athletes, abbreviated as AIN in French, Italian tennis players Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini defeated Andreeva and Shnaider in the championship match.

Because of Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) prohibited athletes from Belarus and Russia from competing in team sports in the Paris Games.

But if the concerned athletes fulfill certain requirements, the IOC has approved their gradual comeback under a neutral banner. There are only seventeen Belarusians and fifteen Russians competing in Paris.
